An up-to-date virus database is a critical component for any security software, on which the detection rate directly depends.
This option is available in the tray context menu of AVG and ensures that the security software compares scan results to an up-to-date signature database, so as to detect both known and recent threats.Performing the updates from within the AVG Antivirus has an additional advantage: the antivirus recognizes signatures already included in its database and performs differential downloads and updates, which obviously take less time to complete. On the other hand, manual updates using the AVG Anti-Virus Definitions package requires more time and can only be performed in full.In order to manually add updates to your AVG Antivirus, you must save the installer to your computer, then access the Options menu and use the 'Update from folder' option to select the BIN file. This document entitled « Manually update AVG anti-virus » from CCM (ccm.net) is made available under the Creative Commons license.

My thanks to Alan May 6 2012 for fixing my AVG update problem.
I had figured out that Zonealarm was the culprit but couldnt see any instances in the program control section of AVG installer being blocked.
This problem occurred nearly 2 weeks ago for me, which does seem to rather coincide with Zonealarms launch of their Free Antivirus and Firewall - coincidence I think not.
I wonder how many AVG users have been tempted to abandon AVG for this very reason and give Zonealarms new package a try.
Thanks again Alan for saving me a lot of time and trouble.
